In April 2013, the annual conference of the Israeli Association for Program Evaluation was devoted to the theme of Social Responsibility, Social Justice, and Evaluation. The conference raised many issues warranting further examination with regard to the evaluation social justice interface. An outgrowth of the discussions following the conference, the current issue revisits the subject, which was addressed in the summer 1990 issue of New Directions for Evaluation. Evaluation and Social Justice, and recently revived in Revisiting Truth, Beauty, and Justice (New Directions for Evaluation 142, Summer 2014). Clearly, the role of evaluation in the arena of social justice and responsibility is not a simple matter of finding the right model or using the correct approach. In this issue, we share a variety of options and examples from settings that might be unfamiliar to the reader on one level, yet all too familiar on another. The importance of giving voice to those populations whose voices are rarely heard and the ability of the evaluator to do so is a common motif throughout the chapters. We are sure that this sampler will contribute to fulfilling the potential of the significant role evaluation can have in promoting social change.
